"It is no exaggeration to say that we live in an age of 'easy believism'; with earnest spirituality at a premium even among professing Christians. This book takes a look at the spirituality of another age. After an overview of the Bible's teaching about God's gracious covenant with His people in Jesus Christ, it focuses attention on man's response to that covenant as expressed in two ways:
. The personal covenant between individual Christian and God - often in the wake of conversion, after restoration following a period of backsliding, or to mark significant milestones and new departures in life.
. The church covenant binding members to one another and to God - of particular interest to independent churches of all kinds - together with covenants entered into by groups of Christians for specific purposes, such as praying for revival.
Tracing the story of both kinds of covenant presents a challenge to individual Christians and churches today. It may be that a sober consideration of what lies behind the practice of covenanting will stir up today's Christians to follow their spiritual forefathers in resolving to devote themselves anew to godly obedience and service."
